Go to the past | Go to the future

Soon turned out, had a heart of glass.

Saturday was the return to Venezia, this time to the islands of San Michele, a cemetery island, and Murano, the home of Venezian glass. Of interest in the cemetery is Doppler, whose contribution to physics was explaining why ambulances change sound as they go past you. The work on Murano is quite exquisite, though bringing some of it half way around the world without breakage may be quite the challenge.

Sunday saw a visit to the Basilica di sant'Antonio in Padova. Inside the church is the tomb, but I question how much is actually in the sarcophagus, as the Reliquary contains not only the '2nd' and '3rd class' relics, which is sensible stuff like cloaks and boxes and marble tablets, but also the '1st class' goodies. This is the jaw bone, tongue, vocal cords and other unidentifiable squishy bits sitting in glass bulbs. Not that I am one to rag on people's deeply cherished medieval superstitions (somewhere Ben is having a fit) but that's a little bit twisted, guys.

Rob said today:
"Remember that what you understand is greater than what you think you understand"

What if what I understand is how much I don't understand and then I don't understand a greater amount than I think I don't understand. If I recognise this, then what I understand is that I don't understand as much as I thought I don't understand and if I feed that into the initial proposition I have an ever increasing level of non-understanding. This would defy Lens' Law, but this is not electromagnetism.

Stroke your little Lenin beards and make the "mmm mmm mmm" noise of thoughtfulness.
