Working 9 to 5

*Grunt*. My body clock has moved through a bifurcation point straight to period 3 and is now entirely chaotic. Motivations such as having some food in the house but no can opener and having no camera (Mum, that one I took takes bad photos and runs cells down literally every half an hour. Easy enough replaced though) cannot get me out of bed and to the shops before they close. At least now I have started at uni and this may force things into some routine.

So, picking up from last time, the second night I was here I went to dinner at the home of my supervisor, Juris, and his wife, Eya (spelling?). Their other guests were a history professor and his wife (whose names escape me) and the conversation was entirely fascinating. Juris and his wife, who is a professional artist, were both born in Latvia just before WW2, and had the horrid experience of being there under Russian occupation and then living under the Germans. In Juris case, German officers were billeted at his house when he was nine. Juris is also a home brewer so we discussed this and I sampled his wares (very good).

Today was the first day at the University of Manitoba, and the usual first day of semester campus activities were so familiar as to make me feel at home: students lining up out the door at the book shop, students lining up out the door at the enrollment office, students crawling over everything like vermin. Hang on, I don't have to be like that anymore; I don't have to teach for a year. YAY!

It's funny, the attitiude is universal. I was talking to a librarian today about Melbourne, Winnipeg, jazz, buses and so forth. Students kept coming up to him asking questions and he kept telling them to come back or look elsewhere until I eventually I said "sorry mate, I'm holding you up". He said "Pfft. They're just undergraduates."

Dude, I was just looking at your photos. You can get porn from a vending machine? That's....er....handy.
